Challenge (Before)
An asylum seeker from Nigeria attended a DPIA immigration-focused forum feeling anxious, uncertain, and overwhelmed about his future in the UK. The attendee shared that uncertainty around immigration status had left him feeling stuck and unsure what direction to take in life. He worried about whether he would be able to build a future in Wales, access opportunities, or eventually find work. At times, the uncertainty made it difficult to stay motivated, and he described feeling like he was “waiting without direction.” Although the forum focused partly on immigration changes and future pathways, the attendee joined hoping to better understand what practical steps he could take while waiting for decisions about his own future.
Intervention (Action)
During the forum, the attendee listened carefully to the speaker discussing future planning, integration, and the importance of making use of opportunities despite uncertainty. Through the discussion and Q&A, he reflected on what he could realistically do to strengthen his future prospects. The conversation particularly resonated with him around the importance of improving English, building confidence, gaining experience, and staying connected to the community. Following the forum, DPIA provided additional support and practical signposting. The attendee was connected with an organisation that could support him in accessing volunteering opportunities, helping him gain experience, routine, and confidence. DPIA also supported him in booking an English language assessment at Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC), helping him take practical first steps toward improving his language skills.
Results (After)
- The attendee reported feeling significantly more hopeful and motivated about his future.
- Anxiety reduced after recognising there were practical steps he could take rather than feeling powerless.
- He successfully attended an English language assessment at Cardiff and Vale College and enrolled in classes.
- The attendee also became engaged in volunteering opportunities, helping improve confidence, routine, and social connections.
- He shared that he now felt he was “moving forward” rather than standing still.
