Supporting a Refugee to Gain More Skills and Grow in Confidence Case Study Guide

Challenge (Before)

Solia was shy when we first met her and lacked confidence in her English. We recognised that she had a lot of potential and was eager to gain more skills and experiences to improve her future in Wales.

Intervention (Action)

Solia attended many information sessions, gaining more knowledge about public services, practical skills and culture. She soon began volunteering with the Shaping my Future project and has been invaluable in helping us run activities and support other members of the group. DPIA referred Solia to an interpreting course and also signposted her to a Welsh course to help her further her education.

Results (After)

Solia successfully completed the induction process and relevant training sessions to become a volunteer. She has grown in confidence in helping to organise and deliver activities. Solia completed her interpretation course and is now a qualified interpreter. She has helped interpret in our activities and has started to interpret for other organisations. She is also an enthusiastic and dedicated Welsh learner.

Key Quotes

As a DPIA volunteer, I hoped to improve my English, build my confidence, and meet new people. Volunteering has helped me feel less isolated and has given me the chance to explore new places and learn about the history of Wales. I’ve developed new skills, grown more confident in myself, and enjoyed being part of a supportive community. What I love most is the opportunity to connect with others, gain new experiences, and make a positive impact.

Solia

Solia has come so far since we first met her and is an amazing role model for others. It’s wonderful to see how much she has grown in confidence and how she is contributing to the community through her newly gained skills and experiences. We are grateful for her volunteering with us and excited to see what she achieves next.
