Challenge (Before)
Twana engaged in the Shaping My Future project within his first few months in Wales. He was struggling with his mental health and the impact of trauma after fleeing persecution in his home country. Despite facing anxiety-invoking situations with his asylum case, Twana took up many opportunities to get to know the community and make Wales his new home.
Intervention (Action)
Twana attended the Shaping My Future project’s flagship workshops ‘Cultural Orientation’ and ‘Health Literacy’. Through these, he gained knowledge and skills about Welsh culture, the law, health services and support available. He attended walking tours, trips to cultural destinations and coffee mornings, making the most of activities to connect with people and places around him. DPIA provided support and encouragement to help him build a bright future for himself in Wales, and referred him to a community training course.
Results (After)
Twana has grown in confidence and is now more optimistic for his future. He completed the community training course where he developed a range of skills and experiences. He has actively been volunteering in multiple cultural settings and has progressed to study at Higher Education.
