Ukrainian Family — From Hosting Breakdown to Independence Case Study Guide

Challenge (Before)

A family of five from Ukraine began working with DPIA in July 2022 after their first hosting arrangement broke down. The local authority placed them with a second host; however, the family were experiencing difficulties settling and were unable to secure employment. Limited English language skills were a key barrier, leaving the family financially insecure and anxious about their future housing options and independence.

Intervention (Action)

DPIA staff provided employment, welfare, and housing-related support. Through an established employer network, staff arranged an interview for the father with a local company seeking someone with his specific skills. He was offered the role immediately and commenced full-time employment just two days after DPIA’s initial visit.

Ongoing support included signposting the family to ESOL classes, completing Universal Credit applications, and conducting wellbeing visits every four weeks to offer advice and additional support. DPIA also supported the family to prepare for independent living by providing guidance on accessing the private rented sector, understanding rental costs, and calculating potential financial entitlements.

In preparation for moving, DPIA connected the family with local charities providing furniture and resettlement support.

Results (After)

The father secured full-time employment within days of DPIA engagement, and this employment was sustained for over six months — with increased job satisfaction and improved spoken English. The family progressed towards independent accommodation, viewing two suitable private rental properties. They were linked with community resources to support a successful transition to independent living, and regular check-ins ensured continued wellbeing and reduced the risk of future housing or financial instability.
