Awareness Training Guide

Increasing awareness of the asylum system

DPIA runs Awareness Training sessions designed to help members of the public understand the UK asylum system, what refugee status and asylum mean, and how communities can welcome and support sanctuary seekers in Wales.

Our team of Sanctuary Speakers, individuals with lived experience of seeking asylum or being a refugee, share their personal stories during these sessions. Through increasing public understanding, we aim to encourage empathy, informed discussion, and practical community support.

These sessions are delivered free of charge to organisations, community groups, and educational institutions.

Awareness Training

What is the project?

DPIA runs Awareness Training sessions designed to help members of the public understand the UK asylum system, what refugee status and asylum mean, and how communities can welcome and support sanctuary seekers in Wales.

Our team of Sanctuary Speakers, individuals with lived experience of seeking asylum or being a refugee, share their personal stories during these sessions. Through increasing public understanding, we aim to encourage empathy, informed discussion, and practical community support.

These sessions are delivered free of charge to organisations, community groups, and educational institutions.

Who is the project for?

This training is for:

  • Community groups
  • Schools, colleges, and universities
  • Public sector teams
  • Voluntary organisations
  • Workplaces and professional groups
  • Anyone wanting to better understand asylum and support sanctuary seekers

The sessions are designed to be accessible, informative, and suitable for audiences with no prior knowledge of asylum or refugee issues.

Why is the project needed?

DPIA's Awareness Training was established in 2009 in response to a growing need for communities to better understand asylum issues and to help create safe, welcoming environments for people seeking sanctuary.

By improving public understanding of the asylum process and the challenges asylum seekers and refugees face, we help communities become more supportive, informed, and inclusive.

The training is currently funded as part of the Wales Sanctuary Service, a partnership of six organisations funded by the Welsh Government to uphold and promote the rights of people seeking asylum in Wales.

Feedback

We really value the feedback we receive. Here are a few anonymous comments about the difference our work is making.

The best part was hearing from someone who has experienced the process. I had little knowledge when I arrived but felt better informed by the end.

Social Care Student, University of Wales

Very informative – I was surprised that the number of people seeking asylum in the UK is lower than what I originally thought.

Student Support Officer, Gower College

Thank you for doing your part to positively inform the public of the truth regarding displaced peoples.

Sherman 5 Volunteer, Sherman Theatre, Cardiff

I appreciated learning about how we can be of more support to displaced people when we're doctors, such as by using interpreters.

Medical Student, Swansea University Medical School
