Shaping My Future

What is the project?

The Shaping My Future project supports asylum seekers and refugees aged 18 and over to feel more integrated within their communities. The project aims to empower participants to build confident, connected, and fulfilling futures in Wales.

The project delivers activities that help participants:

  • Increase understanding of Welsh and British culture, social rights, and responsibilities
  • Learn about and access opportunities in the community
  • Build awareness of public services and how to use them
  • Reduce social isolation and strengthen social networks

What the project offers

  • A varied weekly programme of activities
  • Opportunities to visit new places and meet new people
  • A welcoming, friendly, and inclusive environment
  • Encouragement and support to participate in community life
  • Additional practical support, including interpreters, childcare, and help with transport costs

Who is the project for?

This project is open to:

  • Refugees and asylum seekers aged 18+
  • Individuals living in or near Cardiff
  • People who want to learn more about culture, public services, and community life in Wales
  • Anyone looking to meet new people, feel more connected, and build confidence

The project is designed specifically to support those who may feel isolated, unfamiliar with the UK's systems, or unsure of how to engage with community opportunities.

The Shaping My Future project was shaped directly by the voices and experiences of the people DPIA supports. Recurring comments such as "I wish someone told me this sooner" highlighted the need for clearer, earlier, and more accessible information about life in the UK.

The project promotes integration, not assimilation. Integration is understood as a mutual and dynamic process, enabling individuals to bring their full identities into their community and live happy, fulfilling lives.

Why is the project needed?

The project was developed in response to consistent feedback, questions, and concerns shared by DPIA service users over many years. Many individuals expressed that they wished certain cultural or practical information had been explained earlier in their journey.

The content has been shaped by:

  • Questions and themes raised during Advocacy Forums
  • Service user feedback highlighting gaps in understanding of UK culture
  • Observations of barriers when interacting with public services and civil authorities
  • Evidence from studies such as the 2019 HEAR study (Public Health Wales & Swansea University), which found that many displaced people in Wales lack clear information on where to access appropriate medical support
  • Concerns about low reporting of hate crime and uncertainty about rights and safety

The Shaping My Future project helps address these challenges by providing practical information, confidence-building activities, and social opportunities that reduce isolation and promote long‑term integration.

The project is supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, whose backing helps us tackle the issues faced by the communities we serve.

The project is built around two core information sessions, delivered regularly and available in various community settings or online.

Cultural Orientation: "Wales, Welsh Culture and Your Rights"

This session covers:

  • Welsh culture and local customs
  • Practical money‑saving tips
  • Rights, safety, and hate crime awareness
  • Advice on joining community groups, meeting new people, and building confidence

Health Literacy: "Healthy Living in Wales"

This session focuses on:

  • How to access NHS services
  • Screening programmes and specialist support
  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Healthy lifestyles, exercise, and NHS healthy‑eating guidance
  • Food labelling and warnings in UK supermarkets

Social Activities and Events

The project also runs regular social opportunities, including:

  • Walking Socials – exploring Cardiff and surrounding areas to discover landmarks, useful buildings, and hidden gems
  • Day Trips & Cultural Events – visits to places of interest and community celebrations
  • Coffee Mornings – monthly themed gatherings in a friendly café environment, with conversation prompts and opportunities to connect with others
